Fischer ELT Masterclass is a NEW series of exclusive events designed to connect Romanian teachers with some of the most renowned authors in English Language Teaching (ELT).

Each event is built around a theme that helps teachers learn more, find new inspiration, and have valuable conversations about teaching.

The first event in the series will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the Sheraton Hotel in Bucharest.  We invite you, alongside renowned trainers and authors Alan Maley and Paul Dummett, to explore the question: What makes you a teacher? Is it about having the right qualifications and knowledge? Is it simply sharing facts, or is it about building connections with students, showing empathy, and guiding them as a mentor?

What’s different about this event?

The Fischer Masterclass Series it’s an entirely new format in Romania. It’s more than just a conference; it’s a debate led by two renowned authors and trainers. After the two interactive presentations, where the audience will be an integral part of the experience, Alan Maley and Paul Dummett will lead a debate on the topic “What Makes You a Teacher?” You will have the opportunity to interact and find answers together with some of the most experienced teachers, authors, and teacher trainers.

With free books, special events, and unique experiences, don’t miss the autograph session at the end of the conference — each author will personally sign their book for you.

Worried about attending online? No problem. We’ll ship the autographed books to your home, free of charge.

Becoming a Teacher: Beyond Training by Alan Maley

In a recent discussion, a teacher made this comment, Now that I’ve finished my teacher training, I know how to teach.  But I still don’t know how to be a teacher. This talk is in part a response to that comment, which goes to the heart of teacher education.

The results of an informal inquiry asking experienced teachers to recall a teacher from their past who they had particularly admired, liked and respected and to list the factors which led them to this conclusion.  Overwhelmingly, it was personal qualities which dominated – of the five main characteristics only one referred to professional expertise.

I shall suggest that acquisition or developing these human characteristics is not susceptible to formal training and suggests a number of possible ways teacher educators can help teachers to acquire indirectly some of what seem to be desirable qualities – activities teachers can do alone and activities they can do with the support of others.

Session 2

Paul Dummett is a teacher and writer based in Oxford, UK, where he ran his own school for 10 years teaching English to professionals. Now teaching adults and children with various voluntary organisations, he is interested in how learning can be enhanced through the use of images and stories, critical thinking and memorisation techniques. Seeking out writing projects that explore these interests, he has found a natural home at NGL with the coursebook series LIFE, Look, Keynote and Reflect

Thoughtful activities by Paul Dummett

When planning a productive activity, we consider many different factors, among them its ability to engage and entertain. But we must ask ourselves, ‘Does this activity really practise language in a meaningful way and help to embed it? This workshop examines deeper learning and presents six thoughtful activities that aim to stimulate it.
